Will Milwaukee theaters show “The Interview?”

Although “The Interview” is a moving target at this point the online showtime listings for Marcus Theaters and the  currently list the controversial film as playing at their theaters .

Neither Marcus or Mayfair Mall, where the AMC theater is located, have responded to requests for comment.

intAfter terrorist-like threats were made against the film this week Sony Pictures told exhibitors they had the option not to show the film.

According to the the Carmike chain, the fourth largest in the US with 278 theaters and 2917 screens in 41 states has chosen to cancel showings of “The Interview,” which is scheduled to open Dec. 25.

The New York premiere was cancelled. Thursday’s sneak preview in Milwaukee has not been cancelled, as of this date.

There is no indication the studio will pull the movie. After the 2012 shooting deaths of 12 people in Colorado at a showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” Warner Bros. studio decided against withdrawing the film. Showings went on here as scheduled although Marcus announced it was taking security precautions.

“The Interview” is a crude comedy starring James Franco and Seth Rogen as a talk show host and his producer who have been invited to North Korea, and whom the CIA recruit to kill the country’s leader Kim Jong-un.

Threats against the film are believed to have been made by the same unidentified group that hacked into the Sony Pictures computer system, and released confidential data and emails of the studio and its employees to the press.

According to the New York Times it is unclear how the assassination will be portrayed but the hacked emails describe a request that a scene where Kim’s head explodes when hit by a tank shell “be toned down to remove images of flaming hair and chunks of skull.”

North Korea has called the film an act of war and the film will not be shown in parts of Asia.

In the latest threat the hackers promise a 9-11 type retaliation “at the very time and places The Interview be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to.”

According to the Hollywood Reporter  the Department of Homeland Security has found no evidence of an active plot against movie theaters in the U.S.

Meanwhile, in  a former exhibitor compares fears over showing the film to the recent Ebola panic, and said that  canceling it will encourage similar actions toward other films in the future.
