Although many moviegoers will be drawn to the much hyped bondage and submission film “Fifty Shades Of Grey” over Valentine’s Day weekend, two smaller, quieter films about Alzheimer’s disease should not be overlooked.
In “Still Alice” Julianne Moore portrays an academic in her early 50s who is struck by early onset of the disease. She is, ironically, a linguist, who first loses her words, and then her memory.
Although some will find the economically rarefied upper class world being portrayed hard to relate to, Moore gives a devastating performance as a woman slowly descending into a disease that will take away her life, family and livelihood. Moore won a Golden Globe for her performance and is frontrunner for the best actress Oscar. “Still Alice” opens Friday at the Oriental Theater.
Also opening Friday, at the Marcus Majestic in Brookfield, is “Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me.” The country music superstar and television variety show host was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2011. The often awkwardly intimate documentary portrays Campbell and his family during one last concert tour, on which he is accompanied by his musician son and daughter and prodded on by his caregiver wife.
