Milwaukee Media Notes: WRIT #1; Did WKTI take bite out of WMIL?

Oldies station WRIT-FM jumped into the top spot in the June A.C. Nielsen radio ratings.

In May, it was tied in first place with country music station WMIL-FM.

WMIL dropped 1.1 points to fall into second. WRIT jumped .6 of a point.

aaoldiesfmIt is too soon to tell whether WMIL’s drop can be attributed to the addition of the country format to WKTI-FM at the end of May, or whether it is part of a seasonal affective disorder. WKTI did jump .5 of a share point since the change.

And WKLH-FM’s ratings continue to inch upward since changing its brand from Classic Rock to Hometown Rock. It is up .3 share points since making the change in April.

Yet to be seen is the effect if any of the dismissal of Carole Caine as co-host of the station’s popular morning show might have. WKLH’s bro-station WHQG-FM jumped .7 points since last month.

The .4 of a point drop by news, information and sports station WTMJ-AM could conceivably be related to its broadcasts of games by the last place Milwaukee Brewers.

Below are the radio ratings and rankings for June. The represent a percentage of those listening to radio who are listening to a station in an average-quarter hour.

They measure listening by total audience, 6 years and older. But since broadcasters tend to aim at specific audiences, a measurement of total listening is an imprecise gauge of a station’s success, and not valuable by advertisers. It is, however, the only ratings numbers Nielsen will allow to be made public.

I would have thought that maybe WRIT’s rise to #1 had something to do with WKLH’s fiasco with Carole Caine. No way to know since times are not broken down. Did ‘KLH gain during the afternoon drive after losing big during the morning? Nielsen needs to give us the full monty and not this abstract picture of things. Murphy & Meg are top-notch. Karen, Scott, and Radar are probably still doing well, but the pop-country sound wears thin after awhile. I’d choose 92.5 WMBZ over both ‘MIL and WKTI if I were listening to country music regularly. Instead, I tune in on Internet radio to Nashville’s 650-AM WSM whenever I’m home.

WRIT’s rise is because of them taking full advantage of WLWK going Country and welcoming the audience with open arms. I knew that would happen. And it worked to their advantage.
