Milwaukee Media Notes: Packer Ratings Dip With Each Loss

A number of people have jumped off the Green Bay Packers bandwagon and onto the ledge if local television ratings for the team are any indication. Either that or they couldn’t bear to look.

In either case, the Packers loss to the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field, earned a 41.2 rating final rating of 42.2 on WITI-TV (Channel 6). If wins create excitement and generate viewers, a string of losses can find viewers with something else to do, even yard work, especially in unseasonably warm weather.

Sunday’s rating is almost 1.4 rating points lower than last week’s rating of 43.1, 43.6 meaning 12,504 fewer television homes were tuned in this week compared to last.

A local rating point is the equivalent of 8,932 TV homes.

(Some people blame Ditka for Packer losses.)

Sunday’s rating was 54.4 points lower than first game of the season against the Chicago Bears which earned a 47.6 rating, which represents a loss of about 48,232 TV homes.

Last season’s ratings often reached the 50 point mark.  A substantial number of viewers stayed for the WITI post game coverage for interviews and analysis of what the hell went wrong.

(Numbers have been adjusted to reflect final ratings. Earlier figures were overnight ratings.)

The other positive effect of a Packer’s loss is that the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel puts all that “good” news in the Sports section where it belongs. Finally we can read the banner headline and front page of the main section devoid of all the Packer hype and photos that drove out legitimate news.

    No, I’m not a cheese-head.
