By my count there are seven (7) Wisconsin connections in this Sunday’s Oscar awards ceremony.

Six are film related and one of them is corporate. To recap.

***

The list is front loaded by three local connections to the Oscar nominated stop-motion animated film “Anomalisa.”

Kenosha native and University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee film department Caroline Kastelic oversaw puppet fabrication for the film by Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson.

After college Kastelic worked at Starburns Industries, the animation production company co-founded by Milwaukee native Dan Harmon, creator of “Community.”

Milwaukee Super Bowl Ratings Beat National Average

Overnight ratings for Sunday’s telecast of Super Bowl on CBS earned a 50.6 average for WDJT-TV (Channel 58). That was higher than the national overnight rating of 49.

Local ratings grew throughout the course of the game peaking at 55.4 in the closing moments.

Overnight ratings are preliminary. In Sunday’s game the Denver Broncos upset the Carolina Panthers, 24 to 10. A local rating point is the equivalent of 8,822 television homes.

The national overnight rating was the second highest ever for a Super Bowl game, beating last year’s rating of 49.7 on NBC, according to MediaLife magazine.

The Republican candidates were not the only ones on display during Tuesday night’s presidential campaign debate on Fox Business Channel.

Milwaukee was also being showcased.

There were Paul Ryan sightings and interviews, and RNC chairman Reince Priebus “was all over the place,” said WITI-TV (Channel 6) political reporter Theo Keith, who earlier talked to Ben Carson earlier in the “spin room.”

Milwaukee Media Notes: Radio ratings for August

I’m out of the office, but stopped by to drop in the just released A.C. Nielsen radio ratings for August.

Oldies WRIT-FM remains the top station, but just. 3 of a share point separate the next four stations.

WISN-AM climbed 1.1 share points into a tie for second place. Just spitballing here, but did interest in the Donald Trump candidacy and the Republican presidential campaign drive interest in the politically conservative talk radio station?

Did the dismal season for the Milwaukee Brewers drive WTMJ-AM into tie for fifth place, down .7 of a point? Country Music station WMIL-FM remains in a tie for second place despite dropping .1 of a share.

The computer savvy youths in the Milwaukee area Boy Scout Explorers group who called themselves the 414s, were an early manifestation of cyber activity that today ranges from irritant to criminal.

In 1983 and inspired by the movie “War Games,” about a young computer hacker who almost started World War III, the youths broke into countless computers including the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and even the Milwaukee School of Engineering in a fledgling and innocent flexing of technological prowess that put them in the national spotlight.
