Ridley’s “American Crime” second in time slot

The premiere of the ABC series “American Crime,” by Mequon native John Ridley, on ABC WISN-TV (Channel 12) beat all network competition in the time slot but was second ranked behind local news.

amcrime“American Crime” earned a 5.7 rating and was second behind a 6.5 rating for the 9 p.m. news on WITI-TV (Channel 6). CBS’ “Elementary” earned a 4.4 and NBC’s “Allegiance,” a 12.3.

“American Crime” lost 1.8 rating points from its “Scandal,” lead-in.

The ABC series “Grey’s Anatomy” was the highest rated program of the night with a 9.1 rating. A local rating point is the equivalent of 8,932 television homes.

Ridley is the Oscar-winning screenwriter of “12 Years A Slave” and writer-director of the Hendrix biopic “Jimi: All Is By My Side.”

“American Crime” is a murder drama about race and class and stars Timothy Hutton and Felicity Huffman. Ridley wrote and directed the premiere episode. See my review of it here.

“American Crime” is a limited run miniseries, a format favored by cable and online programmers like Netflix. Overnight ratings do not reflect time-shifting by viewers who DVR the show.

Too the narrative structure of “American Crime,” in which a single story arc plays out over one season – such as with “House of Cards” – invites binge viewing, and viewers may record multiple episodes before watching.
