February Sweeps Ratings: Who Won, Who Lost

So many numbers, so little time.

Here’s a brief breakdown of the February sweeps ratings results.

The survey was conducted Feb. 4 through March 2, and big events during this period included the Super Bowl on CBS and the Oscars on ABC, with the Grammy Awards on CBS somewhere in the middle.

UnknownsIts only worth mentioning because such events can inflate or otherwise impact a station’s late news ratings.

And a little thing called the presidential debates generated considerable attention.

The local news ratings cited here reflect broadcasts Monday through Friday. In parenthesis are increase or decrease compared to the November 2015 and what that figure represents in net loss or gain of viewers. A local rating point is the equivalent of 8,822 television households.

In summary:

– WITI was the only station to improve at 6 a.m. and wins the time slot, is the only station to register an improvement at 5 and 6 where it is third and second ranked respectively. It  wins handily at 10 p.m. The stations 7 a.m. local newscast beats all the network morning shows.

– WTMJ wins at 4 p.m. but drops slightly, is second at 5 p.m. and third at 6 p.m. and drops in both. It is number two ranked at 10 p.m. for the second consecutive sweeps  despite dropping slightly. The station still has not named a replacement for Mike Jacobs at 10 p.m., currently anchored by Steve Chamraz and Carole Meekins.

– WISN is first at 5 and 6 p.m., for the seventh consecutive sweeps period, but is down in both newscasts. It falls from first to third at 10 p.m., where it is down a full rating point.

-WDJT newscasts are last in all time periods, despite heavy promotion during the Super Bowl and Grammys. The station did gain half a point at 10 p.m.
