“Godfather,” Tarantino Events Coming To Milwaukee

An American movie classic and a new film made in the classic tradition, are coming to Milwaukee.

gdFrancis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather” will be shown with Nino Rota’s classic score performed with a live orchestra May 20 at the Riverside Theater.

And on Dec. 25 Quentin Tarantino’s new film “The Hateful Eight” will reintroduce the once popular “roadshow” concept to modern audiences.

The Marcus Majestic in Brookfield will reportedly present the  Tarantino film exclusively in 70mm upon release, which is currently listed as Christmas Day.

It is one of 100 theaters presenting the film in this format. The film, which has a running time of three hours and seven minutes, opens wide on Jan. 7.

Tarantino shot the western about bounty hunters and outlaws, with Kurt Russell and Samuel L. Jackson, on film stock using 65mm lenses that had not been used in several decades. It uses once popular wide-screen Panavision technique used in epics like “Ben-Hur.”

“Hateful Eight”  is being presented in a roadshow format, another anachronism popular when films were treated like theatrical events. “Hateful Eight” begins with a seventh minute musical overture by composer Ennio Morricone, and includes an intermission, which contribute to the film’s running time.

Tarantino said a version of the film which is 6 1/2 minutes shorter will be released later.

A video below explains the Panavision technique and roadshow concept.

It was announced Friday that Coppola’s 1973 film “The Godfather” will be presented with Rota’s Grammy winning score performed live by the Milwaukee Symphony orchestra.

The concert and screening will take place at the Riverside Theater, May 20 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $45.50 to $65.50 and go on sale to the public on Dec. 18. Whether “The Godfather” will be projected digitally or on film was not revealed.

“The Godfather” won three Oscars for best picture, screenplay and best actor for Marlon Brando. Rota won an Oscar for his subsequent score for “The Godfather Part II.”
