Milwaukee Media Notes: May Sweeps Results

Some tech issues kept me from posting the local May sweeps ratings earlier today.

However they will not get in the way this afternoon, he said as the cursor flew across the screen.

Perhaps like Hillary I was hacked.

(Update: Genius Bar guy says my battery is “consumed” and I need a new track pad!)

So let’s keep this short and sweet.

– WITI-TV (Channel 6) won at 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. and WISN-TV (Channel 12) had the number one newscast at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. WITI viewers get up early and stay up late, I guess. And WISN viewers are perhaps lunch bucket types who like a little news with their evening meal. And never the twain shall meet.

February Sweeps Ratings: Who Won, Who Lost

Posted by
Unknowns

So many numbers, so little time.

Here’s a brief breakdown of the February sweeps ratings results.

The survey was conducted Feb. 4 through March 2, and big events during this period included the Super Bowl on CBS and the Oscars on ABC, with the Grammy Awards on CBS somewhere in the middle.

Its only worth mentioning because such events can inflate or otherwise impact a station’s late news ratings.

And a little thing called the presidential debates generated considerable attention.

The local news ratings cited here reflect broadcasts Monday through Friday. In parenthesis are increase or decrease compared to the November 2015 and what that figure represents in net loss or gain of viewers. A local rating point is the equivalent of 8,822 television households.

So much for retirement.

After 40 years in Milwaukee Bill Hurwitz, who brought Martini Radio is mixing drinks in another market.

Just weeks after retiring as vice president and general manager of Milwaukee Radio Alliance stations WLUM, WLDB and WZTI, Hurwitz has joined KCXX in San Bernadino as GM.

According to Radio Insight the station switched formats Tuesday from alternative music to Rhythmic Hot AC.

It is also switching call letters as well to KHTI.

The station is owned by Former Green Bay Packer Willie Davis and Duane Davis’ All Pro Broadcasting.

The Mystery Of WISN Morning Anchor Chase Cain

Posted by
cainScreenShot1 2015-08-19 at 12.30.11 PM

Whatever happened to Chase Cain?

A week ago the new WISN-TV (Channel 12) morning show co-anchor was tweeting up a storm about Gov. Walker, Nik Wallenda, gas prices, Whistling Straits and life in the 5th ward with his linked to WISN stories about those events.

On Aug. 4 Cain introduced a segment on the station’s 10 p.m. newscast called “Social Square,” the same name of a social media segment on ABC’s “Good Morning, America.”

This week he has become conspicuous by his absence.

Milwaukee Media Notes: Christian, Lion & the Spanish Inquisition.

ed-2014

What an interesting week it’s been. For me at least.

My first full week behind the Milwaukee Magazine paywall experiment was dominated by coverage of the WKLH-FM story. Both sides were heard.

The next angles will be former morning show co-host Carole Caine getting a new job and the station hiring a new co-host for Dave Luczak, per Saga CEO Ed Christian.

Saga owns Milwaukee Radio Group which owns WKLH.

I was told a couple weeks ago when outcry over Caine’s departure was at its height, that Christian might call and prepared a list of questions that were nowhere to be found when he finally did this week before I had my morning coffee. Nicely played.

July Sweeps Ratings Results

In the results of the A.C. Nielsen sweeps ratings for July, WISN-TV (Channel 12) claimed the “most watched” title, WITI-TV (Channel 6) grabbed the 10 p.m. crown and WTMJ-TV (Channel 4) remained steady or flat depending on your perspective, and its morning show improved.

The complete story tempts you from behind this Milwaukee Magazine paywall.

WDJT, WTMJ and the battle for third place

It’s no coincidence the most watched newscasts in Milwaukee have the strongest brand identity.

While the stories all four local newscasts cover nightly are broadly similar, WITI-TV (Channel 6) serves them with gemutlichkeit informality while WISN-TV (Channel 12) takes a no-nonsense approach.

Both additionally have deep benches filled with veteran personnel.

And while the recent May ratings sweeps found the stations virtually tied at the top, WITI claimed victory because it, um, won … by the ratings equivalent of one vote in an election.
